Overview

The Shangri La–like Tawang Valley is located at the conclusion of a lengthy and stunning road up from the Brahmaputra plains. The valley resembles Shangri La in that it is a gigantic gash in the ground bordered by gorgeous mountains and sprinkled with gold-and-white gompas (Tibetan Buddhist temples). The journey to get here is an experience in and of itself as you zigzag up and down the hillside, passing through a profusion of coloured prayer flags and stupas. At the same time, the thick forest gives way to snowy passes and peaks as the journey progresses. The majority of the people that live in Tawang and along the way to get there are Monpas, who are Buddhists and have traditionally had the strongest ties to Tibet. Although the natural landscape around Tawang is more stunning than the town itself, the central Old Market area is made more interesting by murals depicting fortunate Buddhist symbols and vivid prayer wheels. Along the route, it is impossible not to notice the significant presence of the Indian Army. This is a direct result of the contested boundary that runs along the northern edge of Arunachal Pradesh with China.
